What is a VIN Verification?

A VIN Verification is a mandatory inspection of your vehicle’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), required by the California DMV. This inspection must be done in person and is necessary for vehicles that are coming from out of state, or those no longer listed in the DMV’s records.

In addition to checking the VIN, the inspection also confirms other vehicle details such as the number of wheels, fuel type, and body style.

Why Do You Need a VIN Verification?

  • Out-of-State – If you’ve moved to California from another US State and brought a vehicle with you, you’ll need a VIN verification.
  • Out-of-System - If you have a vehicle that was previously registered in California but no longer appears in the DMV database, you'll need a vin verification to revive the registration.
  • Changes to the Body Style – If you modify your vehicle, such as converting a dump truck to a flatbed, you must report the change to the DMV and will likely need a VIN verification.
  • Vehicles With a DMV Hold – If the DMV places a  (VLT) stop on your vehicle registration due to a Lien Sale,  but you now have possession of your vehicle, a vin verification can help remove the VLT stop on record by proving that you now have possession of the vehicle.
  • IRP Program Vehicles – For vehicles in the International Registration Plan (IRP), a VIN verification ensures that the mileage is accurately recorded.
  • Fixing VIN Discrepancies – If the VIN on your title doesn't match the one on your car, a VIN verification is the way to resolve the issue.
  • Correcting Odometer Issues – If there’s an error in the reported mileage, a vin verification can correct it.
  • Vehicle Conversions – If you’re converting your vehicle—for example, changing it from a personal car to a commercial vehicle, or from off-road to on-road— a vin verification may be required.

Who Can Perform a VIN Verification?

Here are the people authorized to conduct a VIN verification:

  • The DMV (Any DMV office can do these)
  • Law enforcement officers (if allowed by department policy)
  • CHP officers (With an appointment and a referral from DMV)
  • Licensed private VIN verifiers (Licensed Vehicle Verifiers) The only option for Mobile Vin Verifications.

How Much Does a VIN Verification Cost?

The cost of a VIN verification depends on who conducts the inspection:

  • DMV, CHP, or law enforcement – These verifications are free.
  • Private VIN Verifiers – These professionals charge a fee for their services, including the inspection and travel costs.
